Who we are
Clan Donald-USA, Inc. is a nation-wide organization of almost 4,000 families who trace their ancestry to any of the branches of Clann Domhnaill or to the more than 156 names and affiliated families which constitute the total clan. Clan Donald-USA embraces all the MacDonalds and other surnames that are recognized as branches or adherents of the greatest of the Highland clans.
Clan Donald-USA is an affiliation of persons who qualify by reason of blood, kinship, marriage or legal adoption. Name alone does not count. Clanship is a family matter that transcends nationality, and we regard ourselves as an extended family. (from the Clan Donald USA site)
The Mid-East is one of thirteen regions and includes Delaware, the District of Columbia, Maryland, Virginia, and West Virginia. The region is lead by a Regional Commissiner with each jurisdiction having its own Commissioner and other appointed positions.
Why Join ?
Membership in our organization has a variety of benefits, they include:
Communications
- "By Sea, By Land," our national news magazine published twice per year.
- A'Bhratach (The Banner), the Regional newsletter.
- News of various Scottish events and entertainment, through the State Officers and Conveners and this website.
Clan Activities
- Clan Tents at highland games and festivals in each region.
- Regional, state and local gatherings such as dinners, ceilidhs, picnics, outings, etc.
Genealogy Assistance:
- National, Regional and/or State Genealogists who will provide information and advice at no cost to the member.
- Clan Donald archival information available at the Ellen Payne Odom Genealogy Library located in Moultrie, Georgia.
- Clan Donald archival information available at the Clan Donald Centre at Armadale, Sleat Peninsula, Isle of Skye, Scotland.
and perhaps most importantly Opportunities to share your interest areas with other Clan Donald members (genealogy, history, dance, music, etc.)
How to join
To join Clan Donald USA you must complete a membership form and submit it, along with a $25 fee to you respective State Commissioner. You may email the form, but your membership will not be activated until payment is received (we are working on an automated process). In return you will be contacted by a State Officer and will be sent a new member information package.
