Welcome from the West Virginia Commssioner:Welcome to Clan Donald in West Virginia. West Virginia is very rich in Scotch Irish heritage and evidence is seen through out the entire state. As you are well aware, the Scotch Irish are Scots who, for political or religious reasons, moved to Ireland and stayed there anywhere from 2 years to 200 years before coming to the United States. Clan Donald is proud of the people who moved to Ireland and even has a branch in Northern Ireland with the Earl of Antrim as its chief. Clan Donald is the nine MacDonald (Some spell it MacDonnell) clans combined now as they were in the 1400’s when MacDonald was Lord of the Isles or almost another Scotland consisting of the west highlands and the islands of Scotland. The main page of the website has a list of names associated with our clan. Please refer to that list to see if you are one of us. If you are, please contact us and join the clan. Membership has some great benefits. Besides the national magazine, By Sea, By Land, there is a regional newsletter. You will have a tent to furnish shade (Or shelter from the rain) at the games whether you are in West Virginia or at Grandfather Mountain in NC or Stone Mountain in Georgia. You will be welcomed wherever our clan is found world wide. West Virginia is increasing the number of highland games every year. I think there are three now, one in the panhandle, one in the central part and one in the southern part. Look for the location and dates and come out and join the fun. We also do a lot of genealogy work and have many MacDonald genealogies on file. In fact our national genealogist has roots in Buckhannon, West Virginia and his wife still owns property near there. Clan Donald donated quite a few books to the Hacker’s Creek Genealogy Library and Historical Society near Buckhannon. Email Forrest via fpiver@yahoo.com Return to Mid-East Home |
